Training Courses offered

We are currently offering two training courses focusing on statistical modelling and data science using the R programming language. R is a popular and fast-growing programming language and used extensively in data science and statistics. These courses will introduce users to R, useful in a wide variety of industries.

Absolute BeginneR

This course is where to start in your R journey. It introduces you to how R works, and how it can be used with the popular R development environment R Studio.

Perhaps you have some experience in doing statistics or data science in Excel, or some experience of other programming languages? However, no knowledge is assumed.

Here we take you through from the very beginning and introduce you to the basics of R: input and output, presenting your results graphically, writing functions and procedures, and your first steps on statistical analysis.

Statistical ModelleR

This is a course for those with a little familiarity with R: we offer it in conjuction with the Absolute BeginneR course as a two day course.

Here you learn the principles of how to do statistical modelling. Some theory, some examples, and most of all lots of practice enable you to get the most out of this course. We introduce linear modelling, before looking at some more interesting models: GLM (the generalised linear model), and time series.

Course Tutor: Dr B.M. Parker

Both of these introductory R courses are taught by Dr Parker, who has lectured in statistics at Queen Mary, University of London, and at the University of Southampton, where he has taught many people how to perform statistical modelling using R. He is an expert in the design and analysis of experiments. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.
